How can I access books and articles from the library if I live a long distance away?

To obtain “physical books” that the MCHS Library has in the collection, please check the catalog to ensure we hold the book. Then email your book request to library@mchs.edu.

  • Identify each book title, authors, call number, and date.
  • Be sure to include your name, mailing address, and contact information.
  • Limit your request to 3 items.
  • Books will be sent via USPS the next business day.
  • You will be responsible for mailing items back within 30 days.

To obtain articles from the library’s “paper collection,” email your request to library@mchs.edu.

  • Identify each article’s title, authors, journal name, volume, issue, page numbers, publication date: whatever information you can find
  • Include your email address.
  • Limit your request to 3 articles.
  • Articles will be emailed the next business day.

May I bring food and drink into the library?
Yes. Just take your empty containers and wrappers with you and keep the food and drinks away from the computers.

What is my login for the library databases?
The user name and password needed are also posted D2L. Look for the Library section. Otherwise, you can stop by the desk or give the library a call. We will confirm that you are a student before providing the necessary login.

Can I use library databases from home?
Yes, you can use nearly all of the databases from home. The login process is the same, whether you are on or off campus.

How do I use the library’s eBooks?
You can search for eBooks by title, author, or subject in the library’s online catalog or via any of the direct links to specific collections. Many of the ebooks can be downloaded, but depending on the book or collection, you may need to download software to do so, so we often recommend printing or “grabbing” sections you wish to save and reading it from the screen, rather than trying to download the entire book. Most books’ publishers have placed a page restriction on how many pages can be printed at a time. Ask for help and we can walk you through your options!

How do I sign up for or reserve the library’s study rooms?
We have four study rooms in the library. Each is equipped with a white board and a VCR/DVD player. The two on the west side are “first-come, first-served," and the two east side rooms have sign-up sheets on the door. There is a 3-hour-per-day limit on the study rooms. Groups and students wishing to view a video or DVD have preference.

Is wifi or wireless printing available in the library?
Wireless Internet is available in the library and throughout the Mercy College campus. It permits guest access to the Internet but not to the network drives or printers. Wireless laptops are available for checkout to use in the library.

Can I plug in my laptop in the library, or does the library check out laptops?
There are electrical outlets next to the study carrels on the north side of the library. For safety reasons we ask users to limit use of power cords to the study rooms, the study carrels, and the tables equipped with outlets.

Who do I talk to about problems logging into my student e-mail account or using wireless Internet with my laptop at the college?
Contact the college's Technology Specialist at (515) 643-6704 (cell: 515-473-8158) or email ´╗┐it@mchs.edu

Are all my textbooks available in the library?
We have many, but are not able to purchase every textbook. Textbooks are placed on reserve and must be used in the library. Ask for them at the library's main desk.
