Mercy College was founded by the Sisters of Mercy focusing on education and caring for the underserved. Our educational offerings include a wide variety of health and wellness related studies that prepare students for professional careers of need that focus on helping our community members pursue a healthy life. Health profession education degrees and certificates at Mercy College are designed by experienced specialists in their field with curriculums designed to meet the changing needs of healthcare markets and preparing future healthcare professionals to meet those challenging needs.
Our academic programs are designed with critical thinking as a theme threaded throughout. Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills faculty can instill into and inspire students to achieve. Critical thinking competence requires a philosophical shift from achieving course objectives to instilling a process, learning to thinking, and focus on subject integration. (Thompson, 2011) It is a focus on and an implementation of high impact practices that promote student engagement in the process of learning and the concept of discovery: curricular and co-curricular alike.
Our mission of preparing graduates for service and leadership has become rooted in our focus of service learning and servant leadership. The necessity of quality leadership in all capacities must first be based on becoming a servant leader: understanding the needs of those that aspire to “be” and then championing their success. Through our general education core curriculum, students are prepared with the fundamental knowledge that supports our professional programs. In addition, students are given a more rounded approach to understanding the human being as a person, providing the opportunity for students to apply those values to patients, clients, to one’s self, and those of need within our populations.
