Students in Mercy College of Health Sciences’ Servant Leadership course hosted a pizza lunch on Tuesday, December 3, to collect funds that will replace carpet in St. Vincent DePaul’s child care center.

St. Vincent DePaul in Des Moines provides food, clothes, furniture, financial assistance, and education to over 10,000 Iowans in need each year. As part of Mercy College’s Servant Leadership class, students partner with St. Vincent DePaul every school year. Individuals demonstrate their commitment to Mercy College’s core values by dedicating their time and services to the organization.

St. Vincent DePaul’s child care center was imagined, created, and brought to life by members of past Mercy College Servant Leadership classes. Students in this year’s Servant Leadership class decided to further the vision of those past leaders by replacing the carpet in the child care center.

“We discovered that the St. Vincent DePaul child care center needed carpet during the excursion where we learned about what Mercy College students can do to really help at St. Vincent DePaul,”
stated Lindsay Schroder, Servant Leadership student.

Not only did the class reach their goal, but the Mercy College President offered to match the funds raised, bringing the grand total to $382.00 — almost doubling their goal.

“Servant Leadership is a wonderful class that really shows the core of who Mercy College is. I always love supporting our students with all of their endeavors any way I can,” stated President of Mercy College.

Ashton Carter, another Servant Leadership student, explained, “With the extra funds raised, we were also able to purchase extra toys for the center as well. We’re just so happy we could help out in so many ways with this project.”

Mercy College is still enrolling now for spring classes. To learn more about Mercy College’s academic programs, visit mchs.edu.
