Audience: Registered Nurses

Goal: Upon completion of this course, Nurses will recognize the relationship between the capacity to understand/empathize and the ability to engage patients living in poverty to achieve desired results.

Purpose: This presentation will introduce Ruby Payne’s seminal framework for understanding clients living in poverty and its influences on client health behaviors for the registered nurse. Nurse actions and responses to client situations will be explored.

Presentor: Mercy College of Health Sciences Presenter: Ginny Krichau, BSN, RN - Continuing Education Facilitator CARE Program.

Learning objectives:

  • Explore the broad definition of poverty and its connection with social determinants of health.
  • Compare and contrast the unique hidden rule characteristics of the three socioeconomic classes.
  • Identify practical, person-centered application strategies to better serve under-resourced patients.
