Descriptions of Student Senate Postions

Student SenateStudent Senate provides a great opportunity for you to participate in College life by serving as a student representative to the College Senate, the academic review body composed of College faculty and staff, and to the College Senate's Curriculum, Student Life and Institutional Effectiveness committees. Senate members work with their faculty advisor to establish activities that foster communication and positive relationships among students, faculty and administration.

Thinking of running for Student Senate?

If you have a passion for leadership consider running for a position in Student Senate. As a Student Senate representative you have an opportunity to effect change on behalf of your fellow students. Remember this is a time commitment that involves meetings and fund raising activities. Make a difference at Mercy College and sign up to be a part of this great opportunity to serve. The average time commitment when serving is 2-4 hours a month. A description of each student senate position is available below.

Descriptions of Student Senate Positions

President

The Student Senate President establishes the agenda in concert with the Student Senate Advisor, preside at all meetings, and approve minutes. The President distributes the meeting agenda to the Advisor prior to each meeting. The President or appointed designee represents the students at College Senate meetings.

Vice President

The Student Senate Vice President presides at meetings of the Student Senate in the absence of the President. The Vice President monitors the Senate Bylaws to ensure they are current. They also send the Advisor updates for publication in the Mercy Messenger.

Secretary

The Secretary records the minutes at each Student Senate meeting and has them approved by the President and saves them for future record keeping.

Treasurer

The Treasurer works with the Advisor to maintain the Student Senate checking account. They receive and disperse monies and provides an accounting of fund revenues, expenditures and the account balance at each regularly scheduled Student Senate meeting.

Senators

Senator positions are filled by representatives from their respective program. Senators serve on committees as appointed.

  • Allied Health Senator (1) - any Allied Health program
  • Liberal Arts and Sciences Senator (2) - Liberal Arts and Sciences, including the Bachelor of Science in Health Science or Health Care Administration
  • Nursing Senator (3) - any Nursing program


(1) - If you are a student in any of the following allied health programs (Allied Health (BS), CLS, DMS, EMS, MA, NMT, PTA, PSGT, RT or ST), you are eligible to run for the Allied Health Senator.

(2) - If you are a student in the Health Science or Health Care Administration program or taking just Liberal Arts and Science (LAS) courses you are eligible to run for the LAS Senator.

3 - If you are a nursing student (ASN or BSN) you are eligible to run for the Nursing Senator.

Student Senate Officer 2011-12 Elections

Mercy College holds annual elections for its four officers: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer as well as three senator positions. Watch for an electronic announcement in E-LEOS and Facebook.
