Mercy Auxiliary General Scholarships
Funded solely by the Mercy Auxiliary of Central Iowa, these scholarships are awarded to both first-time and returning students, studying either full or part-time in the Associate of Science in Nursing program, and who demonstrate a financial need and meet the minimum GPA for continuation in the program. No recommendation letters required.
Nursing Alumni Association General Scholarships
Funded solely by charitable contributions of the Mercy College Nursing Alumni Association, these scholarships are available to full and part-time students studying in the ASN and BSN programs who have completed at least one semester of study, based on their cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher, demonstrated financial need, and desire to join and be of service to the Alumni Association. One letter of recommendation required.
Sr. Mary Sebastian Geneser Endowed Scholarships
Funded solely by the charitable contributions of the Nursing Alumni Association membership, these scholarships are available to full and part-time students studying in the ASN and BSN programs who have completed at least one year of study, based on their minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher, a demonstrated financial need, and a desire to join and be of service to the Alumni Association. The award is named after Sr. M. Sebastian, the 13th Director of the School of Nursing (1947-60). One letter of recommendation required.
Sr. Mary Zita Brennan Endowed Nursing Scholarships
Funded by charitable contributions of the Nursing Alumni and friends of Sr. Zita at the time of her death in 1995, these endowed scholarships are available to full and part-time ASN and BSN students who have completed at least one year of professional program study, based on their cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher, demonstrated financial need, leadership qualities, and desire to join and be of service to the Nursing Association. The award is named after Sr. M. Zita Brennan who directed the maternity ward of Mercy Hospital for 44 years, from 1940-84. One letter of recommendation required.
Leona Sweeney Endowed Scholarship
Funded by friends of Leona Sweeney, this endowed scholarship is in memory of Miss Leona Sweeney, a clinical skills instructor at Mercy College from 1943-1986. Scholarships are awarded to either ASN or BSN students who are enrolled full-time with a demonstrated financial need with a GPA of 2.7 or higher. One letter of recommendation required.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing Scholarship
This award is available to first-time or returning BSN students (not BSN Integrated students taking ASN coursework) with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, enrolled in six (6) or more credit hours for the semester seeking assistance, and a demonstrated financial need. One letter of recommendation required.
Beatrice Bender Endowed Scholarship
Funded with a gift from the Beatrice Bender estate, these endowed scholarships are awarded to fulltime students entering their fourth semester of the ASN program with a demonstrated financial need and a cumulative GPA of 2.7 of higher. One letter of recommendation required.
Carl and Mary Cacciatore Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Funded by the descendants of Mr. and Mrs. Cacciatore, this endowed scholarship is awarded to a fulltime student entering their fourth semester of the ASN program with a demonstrated financial need, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and an interest in the following nursing specialties: medical-surgical, maternal-child, or critical care. One letter of recommendation required.
Helen Ann Maloney Scholarship
Funded by the descendants of Helen Ann Maloney, this scholarship is awarded to a fulltime student entering their fourth semester of the ASN program who has demonstrated an interest in home health nursing. Helen Ann Maloney was a long-time Mercy Medical Center employee. One letter of recommendation required.
Mercy Medical Staff Endowment Scholarships
Funded solely by Mercy physicians, this endowment fund provides an annual scholarship to a fourth semester ASN program, full-time student who has a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher and a demonstrated financial need.
One letter of recommendation required.
Claude E. Niemier Perpetual Trust Nursing Scholarships
Funded with a gift from the Claude Niemier estate, these endowed scholarships are awarded to fulltime, returning ASN and BSN students with a demonstrated financial need, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and an interest in pediatric nursing. One letter of recommendation required.
Bernice Ortale Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Funded by the husband of Bernice, who was a 1963 alumni, this scholarship is awarded to a full-time ASN student with a 3.0 or higher GPA in their fourth semester. One letter of recommendation required.
Joann Coppola Randa Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Funded by descendants of Joann Coppola Randa, this endowed scholarship is awarded to a fulltime student entering their fourth semester of the ASN program with a demonstrated financial need, a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher, and an interest in critical care nursing. One letter of recommendation required.
Dr. E.T. Scales Endowed Scholarships
Funded by members of the Mercy Medical Staff dedicated to enhancing the recruitment of African Americans to the nursing profession, these endowed scholarships are available to full and part-time first-year and returning ASN and BSN African American students who have demonstrated a GPA of 2.7 or higher and financial need criteria, with an emphasis on clinical excellence. This award is named after Dr. E. Thomas Scales, the first African American to serve as President of the Mercy Medical Staff in 1953.
Joan S. Gill Nursing Scholarship
Funded by the relatives and friends of Joan S. Gill, Diploma Nursing Class of 1994, this scholarship will be awarded to full- or part-time students enrolled in the ASN program who are non-traditional in age (older than 25) and raising a family, with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher, and who may struggle with dual roles student/parent. Joan died in 2008 after serving as a mother/baby nurse upon completion of her degree at Mercy. She was herself a non-traditional student, who understood the challenges of parenting and fulfilling her educational dreams. Family members wish to honor her legacy through scholarships to students in similar circumstances. One letter of recommendation required.
These honorary scholarships do not require the submission of an application form, instead ASN nursing faculty nominate candidates based on their performance during the first year of professional program course work. The final selection is based on oral interviews with the Mercy Auxiliary Scholarship Committee in the spring of each year. You will be notified by email if you receive a nomination and/or an award.
Mercy Auxiliary Morris and Lenore Mandelbaum Scholarship
Administered by the Mercy Auxiliary through a charitable gift by Robert Mandelbaum, this single endowed scholarship is awarded to a student in the second-year of their professional coursework for the Associate of Science in Nursing degree. Must be nominated by a Nursing faculty member.
Mercy Auxiliary Mary Northup Scholarship
Administered by the Mercy Auxiliary through charitable gifts by the descendants of Mary Northup and Auxiliary friends, this single endowed scholarship is awarded to a student in the second-year of their professional coursework for the Associate of Science in Nursing degree. Mrs. Mary Northup was the first president of the Mercy Auxiliary in 1948 when the organization was created to assist and enhance the Division of Nursing. Must be nominated by a Nursing faculty member.
Mercy Auxiliary Sister Mary Gervase Northup Scholarship
Funded solely by the Mercy Auxiliary, this single endowed scholarship is awarded to a student in the second-year of their professional coursework for the Associate of Science in Nursing degree. Sr. M. Gervase Northup was the 15th Director of the School of Nursing (1964-69). Must be nominated by a Nursing faculty member.
