Nursing Division Policies

Failed Course Policy    Incomplete Policy

The following policies apply to all academic programs within the nursing division.

Failed Course Policy

  • A maximum of one failed (C- or lower) nursing course may be repeated. Failure of or withdrawal from the repeated nursing course or failure of a second nursing course will result in dismissal from the nursing program. A student may withdraw from any courses one time only. A student may withdraw from a maximum of two clinical courses in the ASN program. (See Readmission Policy in the Admissions section.)

  • Students failing a nursing course or liberal arts and sciences program required course prior to the official end of the semester may finish the other courses in which they are enrolled that semester, provided the failed course is not a prerequisite to one of the courses they are currently taking. (See Promotion Policy in the Division of Nursing section.)

  • A student may repeat a required program LAS course with a grade of “C-“ or lower a maximum of one time per course as long as the student’s cumulative GPA remains at 2.0 or above (according to the college probation and dismissal policy). The student must have at least a “C” in all required LAS courses to progress in the nursing program.

  • Failed (grade of “F”) liberal arts and sciences courses that are not part of the program curriculum plan are not subject to the above Failed Course Policy, but are subject to the College Probation and Dismissal Policies.

  • A repeated nursing course must be taken within one year after failing the course.

  • Students who fail or withdraw from NSG 250, NSG 251 or NSG 252 in Spring 2008 will join an existing cohort if one exists or will develop an independent study with the instructor to complete the course.

  • Students who fail or withdraw from NSG 255 and NSG 256 in Summer 2008 will take NSG 230 in Spring 2009. Students who fail or withdraw from NSG 257 in Summer 2008 will take NSG 231 in Spring 2009.

  • Students failing a course in the 2006-07 version of the ASN Degree and repeating the failed course by enrolling in the course in the 2007-08 version of the ASN Degree will receive an “R” for the failed course when satisfactorily passing the replacement course. Failing the replacement course is considered failing a repeated course and the student will be dismissed from the nursing program.

    BSN Integrated students only:

  • Failure (C- or below) of an ASN or BSN Nursing or LAS course will require withdrawal from the BSN Integrated Program. Withdrawal from the Integrated Program will require the development of a new curriculum plan with an ASN Advisor.

Incomplete Policy

Students who are unable to complete a program requirement within a semester because of extenuating circumstances and who are students in “good standing” may request an Incomplete. The program chair/ coordinator or appropriate Dean will determine if the student is able to be promoted to the next semester with an outstanding “I” incomplete grade. Students with an “I” incomplete grade in a prerequisite course(s) will not be promoted to the next semester. Student with an “I” incomplete grade in a clinical course may be promoted depending on the reason for the “I” incomplete. At the discretion of the instructor, deadlines for satisfying an Incomplete can be from a few days to 30 calendar days after the end of the semester in which the incomplete occurred. Incomplete contract must be completed by instructor and student. Students will be required to pay a clinical make up fee. (See Tuition & Fees.)
