Mercy College Hosts “Where Spirituality and Healing Intersect” Conference

Rev. Mark Owusu, Diocesan Director of Campus Ministry; featured speakers Tami Singleton, RN, Palliative Care Coordinator at Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines; Carl Middleton, Vice President of Theology and Ethics for Catholic Health Initiatives; Rev. Eric Johnson, Manager – Pastoral Care at UnityPoint Health-Des Moines; Dr. Ernesto Vazquez, Family Practice Medicine at Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines; and Dr. Barbara Decker, President of Mercy College of Health Sciences.


(Des Moines) - On Friday, February 21, Mercy College hosted the “Where Spirituality and Healing Intersect” conference, sponsored by the St. Catherine of Siena and Catholic Diocese of Des Moines Office of Campus Ministry.

The conference featured a keynote address on the Ethical and Religious Directive for Catholic Health Care Services by Carl Middleton, Vice President of Theology and Ethics for Catholic Health Initiatives. Breakout sessions included topics such as spiritual care of patients, end of life issues and spiritual patient/physician relationships.

Some students attending the conference commented:

  • “I found the break out groups on death and dying very interesting. They showed how to really apply ethics to the work place.”
