Polysomnographic Technology Program Granted Accreditation

(Des Moines) – The Mercy College of Health Sciences Polysomnographic Technology Certificate Program has been awarded accreditation for three years by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

The Mercy College Polysomnographic Technology Program is one of only 11 accredited programs in the United States. “The accreditation process for this program is rigorous, and all those involved should be commended,” said Theresa Smith, Associate Dean of Allied Health.

A sleep technician (polysomnographic technologist) monitors people in a sleep laboratory. The role of a sleep technician uses information technology and direct observation to obtain and evaluate diagnostic data for the treatment of sleep disorders.  Currently, nearly 7,000 people nationwide are employed as polysomnographers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Mercy College is the only Catholic college in Central Iowa and is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA).
