Native American Immersion Experience Leads to Fundraising Effort by Mercy Students

Five Mercy College BSN completion students and their professor spent a week with the Lakota tribe on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in South Dakota. This immersion experience, an option for those in Mercy’s RN-BSN program, lends itself to uncover disparities as they relate to health care in an environment that is among the poorest in the nation.

The group assisted school nurses with lice checks, mentored nursing students at the Reservation School of Nursing, and visited with elders in their housing facility. Since their return, the students have initiated a Des Moines-area fundraising effort to replace the 22 beds at the elder housing facility.

The fundraiser will take place on February 4, 2012 at Forte in Des Moines, Iowa. The evening will include a recap of the immersion experience from a nursing student's perspective, a three course meal prepared by Barattas, as well as some complimentary entertainment by a local comedian. Come for an evening of enlightenment, inspiration, and enjoyment.
