Mercy College Fall Enrollment Climbs by 5% and Default Rate improves to 3.5%

Mercy College of Health Sciences, 928 6th Avenue, reported a fall 2011 semester enrollment of 833 full- and part-time degree-seeking students, which represents an increase of 5% over the fall 2010 semester and a record-high enrollment for the institution.

In addition, according to The U.S Department of Education’s Official Cohort Default Rate Search for Postsecondary Schools, Mercy College’s institutional default rate has improved from 4.2% in 2008 to 3.5% in 2009. The national default rate average is trending the other direction and went from 7% in 2008 to 8.8% in 2009.

Mercy College’s Director of Student Services Karen Anderson, PhD, said “This is a result of College financial aid staff educating students of their financial responsibilities prior to graduation; as well as reaffirmation that Mercy College graduates are securing employment in their chosen field and in a position to repay their loans associated with their education.”

According to Mercy College officials, 51% of the students are enrolled in the School of Nursing while programs in the School of Allied Health account for 17% of the enrollment and the remaining 32% enrolled in degree offerings in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences which also includes pre-professional students.

Mercy College offers Bachelor and Associate of Science degrees as well as certificates in diagnostic medical sonography, emergency medical services, health care administration, medical assisting, nursing, polysomnographic technology, clinical laboratory science, health science, physical therapist assistant, radiologic technology and surgical technology.  According to the U.S. Department of Labor, demand for these professionals will continue to intensify over the next two decades.
