Mercy Nursing Professor's Generosity Leads to Largest Nursing Library in Tanzania

(Des Moines) – After volunteering on various committees at her church and even personally assisting on an international medical mission trip to Tanzania, Africa to construct a birthing center, Mercy College's Assistant Nursing Professor Judith Monroe, RN, MSN, ARNP, CPNP wanted to do more.

Upon returning stateside, Monroe realized that she and others could continue to do their best to assist with the health care efforts in Tanzania by offering their expertise personally or in other ways.

Monroe decided to spearhead a drive for used health sciences books at Mercy College. "The resources of which we refer to as outdated, are considered prized possessions in this region of the world," said Monroe. In a recent thank you note from the recipients of the volumes of books, the inscription read, "because of your gifts, ours is the largest nursing library in Tanzania. I want to pull up a chair right now and read every one of these."

Monroe collected more than 100 books and housed them in her home until it was tiime to package and ship them to California, at which point they boarded a container bound for Tanzania.

Mercy College is the only Catholic college in Central Iowa and is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). To learn more about the 17 health science degree and certificate programs, visit the College website at
