President Decker Pledges $10,000 in Financial Support for 2009-10

(Des Moines) – Mercy College President Barbara Decker has made a $10,000 commitment to establish a scholarship to honor her parents, Frank and Mary Quijano for the 2009-10 academic year. The scholarship is intended to assist worthy students to remain in school that might otherwise be forced to withdraw.

President Decker’s own mother earned her high school diploma from Lincoln High School in 2008 at the age of 91, making her one of the oldest graduates ever from the Des Moines high school. Her father, who died in 2006 prior to her inauguration as College President, was unable to complete his high school dream.

In addition to a demonstrated financial need, students will need to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or better to be considered. Students will also be required to be enrolled full-time and embarking on the second year of their professional program of study to qualify. An essay explaining the applicant’s financial situation and educational goals will be required as well.
