Emergency Medical Services Courses

EMS 089 Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (0 cr)   

This course is intended to prepare a medically competent EMT-Basic to operate in the field.   This includes all skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an ambulance service or other specialized services.

EMS 109 Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (6 cr)   

This course is intended to prepare a medically competent EMT-Basic to operate in the field.   This includes all skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an ambulance service or other specialized services.

EMS 110 EMS Role in Health Care (4 cr)

This course offers students concepts and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a paramedic, pharmacology, medication administration, venous access and airway management. This course will also include the general principles of pathophysiology.

PREREQUISITE: EMS 089 or EMS 109 or EMT Basic Certification,
COREQUISITES: EMS 111, EMS 112, and EMS 113.

EMS 111 Patient Assessment and Communication (3 cr)

This course offers students concepts and understanding of patient assessment and history taking. This course relates human anatomy and physiology to patient assessment. This course includes clinical decision making, communications, and documentation.

PREREQUISITE: EMS 110;
COREQUISITES: EMS 112 and EMS 113.

EMS 112 EMS Skills Lab I (2 cr)

This course offers students simulated patient practice in demonstrating the concepts and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a paramedic, pharmacology, medication administration, venous access and airway management. This course will also include the general principles of pathophysiology.

COREQUISITES: EMS 110, EMS 111, and EMS 113.

EMS 113 EMS Clinical I (3 cr)

This course offers students actual patient practice in demonstrating the concepts and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a paramedic, pharmacology, medication administration, venous access and airway. Students participate in clinical rotations in the Emergency Department, Ambulatory Surgery, Surgery and Post Anesthesia Recovery. Surgery and Ambulatory Surgery rotations are subject to availability and may occur during any of the paramedic program, but no later than the end of the student’s third semester.

COREQUISITES: EMS 110, EMS 111, and EMS 112.

EMS 130 Medical Emergencies and Management (4 cr)

This course offers students concepts and understanding of medical emergencies, including pre-hospital management of those emergencies. This course will also include infectious diseases, toxicology, hematology, and environmental conditions.

PREREQUISITE: EMS 110, EMS 111, EMS 112, and EMS 113;
COREQUISITES: EMS 131, EMS 132, and EMS 133

EMS 131 Trauma Emergencies and Management (3 cr)

This course offers students concepts and understanding of traumatic emergencies, including pre-hospital management of those emergencies. This course will also include shock trauma resuscitation.

PREREQUISITE: EMS 110, EMS 111, EMS 112, and EMS 113;
COREQUISITES: EMS 130, EMS 132, and EMS 133.

EMS 132 EMS Skills Lab II (2 cr)

This course offers students simulated patient practice in demonstrating the concepts and understanding of medical emergencies, including pre-hospital management of those emergencies. This course will also include infectious diseases, toxicology, hematology and environmental conditions.

PREREQUISITE: EMS 110, EMS 111, EMS 112, and EMS 113;
COREQUISITES: EMS 130, EMS 131, and EMS 133.

EMS 133 EMS Clinical II (3 cr)

This course offers students actual patient practice in demonstrating the concepts and understanding of medical emergencies, including pre-hospital management of those emergencies. This course will also include infectious diseases, toxicology, hematology,and environmental conditions. Students participate in clinical rotations in the Emergency Department, Ambulatory Surgery, Surgery and Post Anesthesia Recovery, Critical Care Units, Pediatric and OBGYN. Surgery and Ambulatory Surgery rotations are subject to availability and may occur during any of the paramedic program, but no later than the end of the student’s third semester.

PREREQUISITE: EMS 110, EMS 111, EMS 112, and EMS 113;
COREQUISITES: EMS 130, EMS 131, and EMS 132.

EMS 160 Care of Special Needs Patients (3 cr)

This course offers students concepts and understanding of patients who have or present with special needs and/or considerations. This course will include pediatrics and neonatology, assessment-based management and abuse and assault.

PREREQUISITE: EMS 130, EMS 131, EMS 132, and EMS 133;
COREQUISITES: EMS 161, EMS 162, and EMS 163.

EMS 161 EMS Operations (3 cr)

This course offers students concepts and understanding of ambulance operations and incident command. This course will also include rescue, HAZMAT, rural EMS, terrorism and crime scene awareness.

PREREQUISITE: EMS 130, EMS 131, EMS 132, and EMS 133;
COREQUISITES: EMS 160, EMS 162, and EMS 163.

EMS 162 EMS Clinical III (3 cr)

This course offers students actual patient practice in demonstrating the concepts and understanding of medical emergencies, including pre-hospital management of those emergencies. This course will also include infectious diseases, toxicology, hematology and environmental conditions. Students participate in clinical rotations in the Emergency Department, Ambulatory Surgery, Surgery and Post Anesthesia Recovery, Critical Care Units, Pediatric and other specialty units. Surgery and Ambulatory Surgery rotations are subject to availability and may occur during any of the paramedic program, but no later than the end of the student’s third semester.

COREQUISITES: EMS 160, EMS 161, and EMS 163.

EMS 163 EMS Internship (1 cr)

This course offers students in the field experience working under a preceptor in demonstrating and understanding of medical emergencies, including pre-hospital management of those emergencies' EMS patients. This course will also include all aspects of the pre-hospital care. Students must complete all clinical rotations from EMS 231, EMS 232 and EMS 233 prior to beginning this internship.

PREREQUISITE: EMS 130, EMS 131, EMS 132, and EMS 133;
COREQUISITES: EMS 160, EMS 161, and EMS 162.
