Learn First Aid and CPR

First Aid and CPR courses are offered through the AHA Training Center at Mercy College for parents, grandparents, childcare providers, non-medically trained professionals, as well as health care professionals, including nurses, EMT’s, lifeguards and fire fighters.  All classes are based on the 2005 guidelines of the American Heart Association.

Customized Classes Available

We offer courses to suit nearly every need. Business groups and community organizations with 10 or more people can arrange a private class. The Training Center Supervisor can help with group scheduling and pricing. Please call (515) 643-7485.

Community CPR

Adult, Child and Infant CPR and First Aid for Children

  • Designed for parents, grandparents, babysitters and others charged with the responsibility of caring for children under eight years of age.
  • 3 1/2-hour course is provided as informational only and not for certification.
  • Learn prevention practices and rescue techniques for children and infant victims of breathing problems, choking and cardiac arrest.
  • Learn proper response to burns and bleeding emergencies, medical emergencies, bone injuries, bites, stings and poisoning.


Participant Fee: $25, CPR for Family and Friends
textbook included.

Work Place CPR

Child Care Provider CPR

  • Teaches the proper rescue techniques for adult, child and infant victims.
  • 3-hour course.
  • Learning scenarios are geared towards the daycare setting.
  • Meets the state requirements for licensed childcare providers.


Certified Course: Skills Test Only
Participant Fee: $30, Heartsaver CPR textbook included.

Heartsaver AED – Adult CPR and Automated External Defibrillator

  • Treatment of adult choking, heart or breathing stoppage using CPR techniques.
  • Recognition of breathing problems, heart attack, (AMI) or stroke (CVA).
  • Learn to use Automated External Defibrillator safely and effectively.
  • 3-hour course.
  • Designed for the non-medically trained individuals with access to an AED.


Participant Fee:
$40, Heartsaver AED. Scheduled as group only.

Work Place First Aid

Child Care First Aid

This course was developed to meet the specific needs for the state of Iowa Daycare providers with Pediatric First Aid. This 4 hour course covers Medical emergencies, Injury emergencies, Environmental emergencies and covers First Aid steps.

Participant Fee: $40, Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid workbook included.

Healthcare Provider CPR Course

  • Prepares the healthcare professional to respond effectively to adult, child and infant victims whose breathing or pulse has stopped.
  • One and Two-rescuer CPR.
  • AED, BVM and Barrier device use.
  • 4 1/2-hour course provides a certification with a two-year recommended renewal period.
  • Designed for health care providers such as nurses, physicians, law enforcement and fire/EMS professionals, and medical program students.


Participant Fee: $55, BLS for Healthcare Provider workbook included.

Healthcare Provider CPR–Renewal

  • Provides the healthcare professional with the most current update information and re-verifies CPR skills.
  • One and Two-rescuer CPR.
  • AED, BVM and Barrier device use.
  • 3-hour course provides a certification with a two- year recommended renewal period.
  • Designed for health care providers with a non- expired Healthcare Provider CPR card.


Participant Fee: $40

Bloodborne Pathogens in the Workplace

  • Teaches the recognition of potentially infectious materials and how to respond to them.
  • Learn the latest in disease and injury prevention.
  • 1½ hour course.
  • Meets the state requirements for licensed childcare providers.
