COMPASS Test Requirement

ESL Reading Test     Nursing Pre-Algebra Test

Mercy College of Health Sciences offers ESL Reading and Pre-Algebra COMPASS Tests for those students who need to satisfy pre and post admission requirements.

Please allow 1 to 2 hours to complete the test. Testing will take place at Mercy College of Health Sciences in the Computer Classroom in the the Sullivan Center, Room 106. For directions to the campus, please click here. Be sure to arrive on time at your scheduled session, as the session will close promptly at the scheduled times. Children are not allowed in the testing center.

Students will receive either a reminder email or phone call the day before their scheduled test from a representative of Mercy College.

ESL Reading Test

One of the admission requirements to the College is an ESL Reading Test if English is not your native language and you did not graduate from a U.S. high school. This test helps verify that students have the English skills required to be successful in higher education and thus ready for admission to Mercy College.

You will be notified by the Admissions Office upon receipt of your application if you are needing to satisfy this admission requirement. ESL Reading Test Score

The ESL Reading Test may only be taken twice.

First-time Test Takers

  • If you score 92 or higher, please bring a copy to the admissions office to continue the application process; or
  • If you score 91 or lower, we encourage you to review the instructional exercises at www.act.org/compass/tests/esl/reading1.html prior to retesting.


Second-time Test Takers

  • If you score 92 or higher, please bring a copy to the admissions office to continue the application process; or
  • If you score 91 or lower, you have the option to enroll as a guest student for RDG 095 only. You will not be eligible for college admission for at least one academic semester, at which time you will need to demonstrate your additional efforts to improve your English abilities. 

Nursing Pre-Algebra Test (ASN Students Only)

One of the admission requirements of the Associate of Science in Nursing program is to complete a math requirement. The Nursing Pre-Algebra Test verifies that students have the math ability required to enter the nursing program. If you are notified in your acceptance letter that the Pre-Algebra test is required, the test must be taken BEFORE you attend New Student Orientation and Registration or you will automatically be registered to take MAT 095 (Pre-Algebra).

    The password to register online is located  in your Admit Packet under COMPASS Test. Students taking the Nursing Pre-Algebra test are allowed to use calculators that are below T-83. Phone calculators are prohibited.

Nursing Pre-Algebra Test Score

The Nursing Pre-Algebra test may only be taken twice.

First-time Test Takers

  • If you score 80 or higher, you are ready to sign up for orientation/registration and are not required to take MAT 095; or
  • If you score 79 or lower you may remediate using the study resources above to review math content, and retest a second time. To retake the Pre-Algebra Test click here to register, or you may register for MAT 095 at orientation/egistration.


Second-time Test Takers

  • If you score 80 or higher, you are ready to sign up for orientation/registration and are not required to take MAT 095; or
  • If you score 79 or lower, you will register for MAT 095 at orientation/registration.
     

If you choose not to take the Pre-Algebra Test prior to orientation/registration as part of your ASN nursing admissions requirement, you will be scheduled for MAT 095.
