Advice to Students
Study in as many different ways as possible. You need many paths to the information. Call for help before you drown.

Clinical/Field Experience

  • Since starting my nursing career in 1981 I have worked general medical floors, general psychiatric floors, occupational health at a factory, long term care as an aide (pre 1981), nurse, and director of nursing, private duty home care, lactation consultant seeing mothers and babies both in the hospital and in their homes, and a volunteer parish nurse.  I have taught CPR for various organizations. I have been teaching nursing students since 2003.

Research Interests and Professional Projects

  • Lactation and childhood obesity, specifically children under 5.

Professional Memberships

  • International Lactation Consultant Association
  • Sigma Theta Tau
  • NAPNAP (for pediatric nurses and pediatric nurse practitioners)

Community Service Involvement

  • 10 years with the Girl Scouts, including earning the United Way Volunteer of the Year for this service.  I have been on a 2 week biking trip in Iowa with Girl Scouts from all across the nation.
  • 12 years with the Boy Scouts
  • Various church committees, including one international medical mission trip to Africa to construct a birthing center.

Personal History

My Dad wanted me to follow him into anesthesia, but I told him I preferred my patients awake.  My favorite time in nursing is spent with parents. I chose pediatric nursing because of the parents. I have spent many years in various nursing positions and I still came back to teaching parents. My family enjoys biking, mountain hiking, Renaissance Festivals, music and art festivals.  I have spent many years as a band, orchestra, track and cross country parent supporting the teams in all the ways parent volunteers do.
