Despite decades of declining death rates, heart disease and stroke remain the first and third leading causes of death for men and women both in Iowa and the United States.
In 2007, of the 27,126 total deaths in Iowa, 9,200 deaths (33.9%) were due to major cardiovascular disease. Of those, 6,843 deaths were attributed to heart disease and 1,680 from stroke, which accounts for 31.4% of the total deaths.
