Our Program

Mercy College offers the first - and only – health information management bachelor degree program in Iowa. Our 120-credit hour program prepares you for a wide range of opportunities in managing patient health information and medical records, administering computer information systems, and coding diagnoses and procedures for healthcare services provided. 

Job opportunities for Health Information Managers exist in multiple settings throughout the healthcare industry, including hospitals, multispecialty clinics and physician practices, long-term care, mental health, and other ambulatory care settings. The profession has seen significant expansion in non-patient care settings, with careers in managed care and insurance companies, software vendors, consulting services, government agencies, education, and pharmaceutical companies.

All HIM program courses are 100% online*, affording you a variety of options to fit your schedule.

Our Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management program will be seeking accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

How to Apply

College Admission First
The first step in the admissions process is to apply using the Mercy College Application.  Early application is encouraged.  For a complete list of College application deadlines, click here.  Students admitted to the College may enroll in Liberal Arts & Sciences (LAS) courses prior to admission to any academic program.

Program Admission Second
Following College admission, the applicant will complete an application to program to ensure admission criteria are met prior to being admitted to the program.

Practicum Experience

You will have the opportunity to job shadow in the area of your interest (called practicums) at Mercy Medical Center or another healthcare provider approved by the Program Chair.

Faculty

We have an exceptional, highly educated, faculty team with years of experience. Our fulltime liberal arts and sciences faculty members are Ph.D.-prepared and adept at integrating their subject matter into a comprehensive health science curriculum. As a student, you will receive an exceptional level of personalized instruction.

Job Outlook

As a graduate of the BSHIM program, you will be employable nation wide throughout many health care settings. Employment of medical and health services managers, which includes health information management (HIM) jobs, is expected to grow faster than average and employment outlooks are good because of how rapidly technology is transforming health care. Because state and federal regulations affect how institutions can deliver distance education degrees/programs/courses, Mercy College of Health Sciences may have limited ability to offer online opportunities to students who are physically present in a state outside of Iowa.
